NEWCASTLE Jets have fought off Sydney FC to re-sign defnsive rock Nikolai Topor-Stanley for the next two seasons in a major coup for the club.
Topor-Stanley had been widely linked with a move back to Sydney - possibly in time for their looming Asian Champions League campaign - after a brief spell with the club as a left back in 2007.
After a stint at Perth Glory, Topor-Stanley joined the Jets where he has been a vital figure in defence this season since moving into a more central role.
“I am really pleased to know that I am in Newcastle for the next two seasons,” Topor-Stanley said.
"The club is certainly heading in the right direction and I am happy knowing that I am going to be a part of it."
Ray Baartz, Chairman of the Jets Football Advisory Board, said the club was pleased to have re-signed Topor-Stanley who was emerging as a strong leader of the club.
“Nikolai has been a rock of our defence this season and he has come a long way in such a short amount of time,” he said.
“Nikolai will form the basis of our leadership group over the next two years and is a great role model for our young players that we have coming through.”
Nikolai Topor-Stanley has been named on the shortlist for the FFA Team of the 2010/2011 season and said to be targetting a recall to the Socceroos squad.
