EXCLUSIVE: Gary van Egmond wants Aurelio Vidmar to play an important role in helping Newcastle Jets prepare for the challenge of the Asian Champions League.
The Jets coach is delighted with the impact the Reds have made on the competition this year and Vidmar’s men are now just 90 minutes from the ACL final itself.
Van Egmond admits Adelaide’s progress is whetting appetites at EnergyAustralia for their own stint at the event next year.
A-League points are the immediate priority for van Egmond but he won’t be neglecting the club’s build up to the big stage in Asia.
He told au.fourfourtwo.com: “I think everyone is delighted with the progress Adelaide has made in the competition this year.
“I know the boys here at the club are following it all and I’m sure it brings home just what we have to look forward to.
“I will be calling Aurelio Vidmar for a chat about it (the ACL) and hopefully he will be able to help our preparations for the competition."
Van Egmond added: “It’s a big help to talk to those who have been through an experience and learn what you can.
"Hopefully we can learn what worked well for Adelaide and the pitfalls you need to avoid during the tournament.
“We’d love to follow suit and I know it’s a challenge that everyone here will be looking forward to.
“But the immediate task is the A-League and trying to secure success in that competition.”
Newcastle qualified for their tilt at ACL glory by seeing off Central Coast Mariners in last season's grand final.
