NEWCASTLE Jets opened up their National Youth League campaign with a 3-2 win over Brisbane Roar at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
In a highly entertaining and skilful match, both sides played some enterprising and attacking football but it was the home side who managed to claim all three points.
Brisbane goalkeeper Matt Acton was called into action in the opening 20 seconds of the match when he was forced into a one-handed save from a William Angel volley.
Stefan Vrbesic had Roar's first real opportunity when Newcastle goalkeeper Robbie Kolak made a hash of a clearance, but the young midfielder was unable to direct his long-distance lob for goal on target.
Roar got into stride quickly against the home side with crisp passing and pressure on the Newcastle players creating openings.
Vrbesic looked to capitalise on one of those openings on 12 minutes when he combined well with Tim Smits, but his powerful shot was well saved by Kolak.
Despite the good work going forward, Newcastle were still posing a threat and Acton was again forced into action on 17 minutes when he again tipped over the bar, this time from Matthew Sim.
The Jets took the lead three minutes later when an unmarked Jason Naidovski rose to meet a Damian Brosque cross from the right and put the ball into the net.
Looking to bounce back strongly Tyler Thurtell launched a shot from the edge of the box two minutes later which forced Kolak into a good save.
From the resulting corner Vrbesic again tested the goalkeeper who again kept the ball out of the goal.
However, the away side were two goals behind when Brosque swung a corner into the box and Scott Balderson rose highest to power the ball past Acton.
Acton then saved his side from further embarrassment after the restart following a mishit clearance from Thurtell, but the young keeper was strongly out to the feet of James Virgili before pouncing on the loose ball.
Adam Sarota tried to inspire his side to rally with a bursting run through the midfield, but his left-foot shot at the edge of the box was easily dealt with by Kolak.
Josh McVey nearly got Roar back into the match three minutes before the break, but his curling shot from a Vrbesic lay-off struck the crossbar and bounced to safety.
Roar Youth coach Rado Vidosic shuffled his deck after the break, bringing on Luke Brattan and Jordan Farina for Ken Dougall and Tyler Thurtell respectively.
McVey had a gilt-edged opportunity to bring the away side back into the contest seven minutes after the restart with a close-range volley from a Calum O'Connell flick on, but he hit his shot straight at Kolak.
Vrbesic managed what McVey couldn't when he hit a seemingly innocuous shot at Kolak's goal, but the keeper misread the run of the ball and it rolled over the line.
Newcastle's two-goal lead was restored eight minutes later courtesy of a curling left-foot Naidovski shot which slotted inside the post from just inside the box.
In a see-sawing contest, Farina lined up a Brattan won free-kick on 74 minutes, but his beautifully struck shot thundered against the post and out of danger.
Brisbane continued to press forward with Tim Smits having a number of chances with the striker finally nodding home a goal on 84 minutes from a delightful Vrbesic cross.
Vrbesic then attempted to grab a point for Roar with four minutes left on the clock with a well-struck effort from outside the box, but Kolak was this time behind the ball to deal with the danger.
Roar continued to search for the equaliser until the final whistle but couldn't find the vital strike to salvage a point.
