Fairfax newspapers have reopened speculation that ex Football Federation Australia boss John O’Neill will return to head the Australian Rugby Union.
Current ARU boss Gary Flowers will today announce that he will end his reign by the end of the year and sections within the ARU are said to support a move to bring back the high-profile John O’Neill.
Mr O’Neill told The Sydney Morning Herald last night: "The news about Gary comes as a complete surprise, and I wish him well in his future endeavours. My position is as it was last January. My affection for rugby is unabated. If the right opportunity came to assist rugby, I would consider it. At this juncture no such opportunity has arisen. So it's not a discussion we need to have."
