While Kerr won the top women's gong, Aaron Mooy missed out on the Asian International Player of the Year award to Tottenham's Korean star Son Heung-Min.

Ex-Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou also was beaten to the AFC Coach of the Year award by Urawa Red Diamonds boss Takafumi Hori.

Kerr was the main attraction for Australian football fans, winning the top female award ahead of Sung Hyang Sim (North Korea) and Saki Kumagai (Japan).

The Perth Glory forward had helped her club to the W-League Grand Final and played a leading role in Australia's triumph at the Tournament of Nations.

She also scored a NWSL league-record 17 goals and providing four assists for New Jersey club Sky Blue FC and became the competition's all-time top scorer during the 2017 season and scored a record number of goals in one match, four.

Kerr's achievements come after helping the Matildas win the 2017 Tournament of Nations in the United States, over the hosts, Japan and Brazil.

She scored a hat-trick against the Japanese and also hit the scoresheet in a triumphant home series against Brazil.

Kerr also won the Julie Dolan Medal for best W-League player during the 2016-17 season with Perth Glory.

Speaking after receiving the award, Kerr was typically modest about her achievements: "This is the third time Australia have won the award and I think we are going in the right direction with women's football in Australia,” she said.

“I am very proud to fly the flag for Australia. Individual awards are not important.

"It's been a good year for the clubs and the Matildas and my top memory on a personal level is breaking the record, and the award in the US which I will probably remember forever.

"My team mates are everything, like I said, without them it wouldn't be possible. My two clubs are my everything and hopefully in the future I will have success also with the national team."

The West Australian has set a new record in 2017 by scoring in her last six matches for the Matildas.
