AC Milan skipper Paolo Maldini will put a knee operation on hold to play in his eighth Champions League final.
The veteran defender missed the semi-final second leg against Manchester United after failing to recover from a knee injury sustained in the first clash.
The absence of Maldini did not hinder the Rossoneri who went on to win 3-0 at the San Siro to book a meeting with Liverpool in the final in Athens on May 23.
"Had we lost against Manchester United, I would have undergone knee surgery," said Maldini.
"But I really want to try to play my eighth Champions League final of my career."
Maldini admitted it was painful to have to watch the game from the stands instead of being on the pitch, but claimed his team-mates made him proud.
"I am now used to it," he said."But I knew my team was in good condition.
"I am very proud to be the captain of Milan."
The 38-year-old will be eager to lead his team on to the pitch against Rafa Benitez's men in the showpiece, hoping to avoid the same fortune experienced in Istanbul in 2005.
Milan lost in a penalty shoot-out against the Reds, having given a way a 3-0 half-time lead - Maldini scored Milan's opener with the fastest goal in Champions League final history, 51 seconds after kick-off.
"I have thought about the final of Istanbul for at least a year, even though two years have gone by," said Maldini.
"Liverpool are a team that have no fear and I hope to be available."
The former Italy international has struggled with numerous knee injuries in recent years but he is ready to postpone retirement for another year.
He has his eye set on lifting Europe's top club trophy for the fifth time in his illustrious career.
"It would be great to lift the Champions League cup," said Maldini. "But then there will be the European Super Cup left to play and the Inter-continental final, so I have every intention to continue to play."
