OS AUSSIES: After some impressive performances in the past fortnight, it was a subdued weekend for our Aussies Abroad with only a handful of highlights and a number of key youngsters continuing to be starved of game-time.
In the Dutch Eredivisie, Tommy Oar played 90 minutes and provided two assists as FC Utrecht moved into fourth position following a 5-1 thumping of Willem II.
Oar delivered a corner which was headed home by Cedric Van der Gun on 13 minutes, before setting up Alexander Gerndt in the second half after latching onto Anouar Kali’s through ball.
Adam Sarota played 84 minutes in the clash and had a chance to open the scoring early in the contest, while Michael Zullo was an unused substitute.
Elsewhere, Jason Davidson was an unused substitute as Heracles suffered a 4-0 thumping from PSV Eindhoven.
In the English Premier League, Mark Schwarzer played the full match in goal for Fulham in their 2-2 draw with Everton. Schwarzer made a good early save from Marouane Felliani but was beaten twice in the second half by the Belgian, before making a fine save late in the game to deny Felliani again.
Brad Jones kept his spot between the sticks for Liverpool in their 1-1 draw with Newcastle. Jones was rarely called upon in the clash but was beaten by a stinging Yohan Cabaye strike from a tight angle in the first half.
Brett Holman came off the bench in the 85th minute in Aston Villa’s rousing 1-0 win away to struggling Sunderland. Chris Herd missed the clash after sustaining a knee injury in the mid-week Capital One Cup clash with Swindon Town.
After shipping in seven goals midweek, Adam Federici returned to the bench in Reading’s 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers Queens Park Rangers. In a further blow for the Aussie, his replacement Alex McCarthy put in a superb performance for the Royals.
In the Championship, Scott McDonald’s hot form continued, scoring again in Middlesbrough’s 4-1 win over Charlton.
McDonald, who played 90 minutes, struck just after half time, latching onto Josh McEachran’s through ball to draw a defender and finish well from inside the box.
McDonald nearly doubled his tally with a fine volley that drew a diving save from Charlton ‘keeper Ben Hamer. Rhys Williams missed the clash through injury.
Mile Jedinak put in a full shift in midfield as Crystal Palace beat Blackburn 2-0. The win came hours after Palace unveiled former Blackpool boss Ian Holloway as their new manager.
Shane Lowry played the full 90 minutes in defence as Millwall thumped Nottingham Forest 4-1, while Neil Kilkenny returned from injury as a 64th minute substitute in Bristol City’s 1-0 loss to Huddersfield.
Patrick Kisnorbo was absent from the match-day squad as Leeds drew 2-2 with Brighton. In a worrying sign for the defender, he is yet to see any league game-time this season, while Massimo Luongo was absent as Ipswich won 1-0 at Birmingham.
In the English FA Cup, Dean Bouzanis played 90 minutes but was merely a spectator in Oldham’s 2-0 win over non-league Kidderminster Harriers. Bouzanis did however produce a superb save in the second half to deny Anthony Malbon’s header. James Wesolowski also played 90 minutes in the clash while Alex Cisak was an unused substitute.
Shane Cansdell-Sherriff was taken off with a hamstring injury just minutes into Preston North End’s 3-0 win over Yeovil Town. Bailey Wright wasn’t in the match-day squad due to an ankle injury.
Elsewhere, Aaron Downes put in a full shift as Torquay were disappointingly knocked out by non-league Harrogate 1-0. Downes was out-muscled by Nigerian Chibuzor Chilaka who drove the ball home in off the post to send Harrogate through to the second round. Meanwhile, James Meredith played 90 minutes as Bradford City drew 1-1 with Northampton Town.
In the Scottish Premier League, Ryan McGowan played 90 minutes as Hearts suffered a shock 1-0 loss to bottom club Dundee FC. After falling behind in the first half, McGowan almost assisted an equaliser as his pinpoint cross from the right was headed over by Marius Zaliukas. Dylan McGowan was an unused substitute, as was Alex Baird for Dundee.
In the Scottish FA Cup, Marc Warren was absent from the Airdrie United side that drew 2-2 with Raith Rovers. Elsewhere, Francesco Stella was missing from the Rangers side that thumped Alloa Athletic 7-0.
In the German Bundesliga, Robbie Kruse put in a full shift and picked up a second half booking in Fortuna Dusseldorf’s 3-2 loss to Bayer Leverkusen.
Kruse had a handful of neat touches, setting up Dani Schahin who could only find the side netting early in the second half, before Kruse played in Gerrit Wegkamp in the final minute but the German pulled his shot wide, spurning a golden chance to equalise.
Mitch Langerak was an unused substitute in Borussia Dortmund’s 0-0 draw with Stuttgart, as was Nikita Rukavytsya in FSV Mainz’s 2-1 loss to Werder Bremen.
In the German Second Division, Mathew Leckie came off the bench for the final 17 minutes as FSV Frankfurt secured a 2-1 win away at MSV Duisburg.
In the Dutch Second Division, Ryan Marveggio was absent from the match-day squad as Telstar lost 2-1 to Almere City, with the winner coming from former Gold Coast United skipper Paul Beekmans.
In the Italian Serie A, James Troisi was an unused substitute as Atalanta made it 2 wins on the trot with a 2-1 win over Sampdoria.
In Greece, Apostolis Giannou was a 77th minute substitute as PAOK beat Panionios 2-1.
In Austria, James Holland put in a full shift and was instrumental in midfield as Austria Wien remained top following a 6-1 thumping of SV Ried.
In Denmark, Brent McGrath was an unused substitute as Brondby were thumped 3-0 at home by Odense BK.
In the Belgian Second Division, Kofi Danning was absent from the match-day squad as CS Vise beat White Star Woluwe 3-2.
In Portugal, Caleb Patterson-Sewell was an unused substitute as Vitoria Setubal pulled off a shock 2-1 win over Sporting Lisbon.
In Russia, Luke Wilkshire played 90 minutes at right-back as Dinamo Moscow lost 2-0 at FK Krasnodar.
In Croatia, Tomi Juric started and played 66 minutes in Inter Zapresic’s 0-0 draw with Cibalia Vinkovci, while Steven Lustica was absent in Hajduk Split’s 3-0 win over NK Zadar.
In Serbia, Eli Babalj was an unused substitute as Red Star Belgrade lost 2-1 at home to FK Jagodina. Elsewhere, Matthew Byrne was absent from the Donji Srem side that beat FK Smederevo 1-0.
In the Czech Republic, Kerem Bulut was an unused substitute as Mlada Boleslav’s 1-1 draw with Sparta Praha.
In the K-League, Adrian Madaschi played the full 90 minutes in defence as Jeju United beat Luke Devere’s Gyeongnam 2-0. Devere was missing for Gyeongnam.
Elsewhere, Eddy Bosnar played 90 minutes as Suwon Bluewings drew 1-1 with FC Seoul, while both Robert Cornthwaite & Matt Simon were absent from the Chunnam Dragons side that lost 1-0 to Daegu.
Alex Wilkinson put in a full shift for Jeonbuk Hyundai in their 3-0 win over Matt McKay’s Busan I’Park. McKay also played 90 minutes for Busan.
Brendan Hamill & Nathan Burns were absent from their respective sides match-day squads as Incheon United beat Seongnam 2-1.
In the Chinese Super League, Joel Griffiths played 83 minutes and scored in Shanghai Shenhua’s 3-0 win over Qingdao Jonoon. Griffiths’ goal was his last action before being substituted, as he latched onto a through ball and finished calmly past Mou Pengfei.
Dino Djulbic played 86 minutes in attack as Guizhou Renhe rounded out their season with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Dalian Shide. Djulbic was a handful in attack, and provided an assist for his side’s second goal on 72 minutes, laying the ball off for Yu Hai whose powerful shot went in off the crossbar.
Elsewhere, Daniel Mullen played the full 90 minutes as Dalian Aerbin beat Hangzhou 2-1, however it wasn’t enough to clinch an Asian Champions League spot. Dalian finished the season in 5th position.
There was also heartbreak for Jonas Salley who played 90 minutes in Shanghai Shenxin’s 3-2 loss to Liaoning Hunyong which saw Shenxin relegated.
Milan Susak was absent from the match-day squad as Tianjin Teda lost 1-0 to Changchun Yatai, while Rostyn Griffiths was also missing in Guangzhou R&F’s 1-1 draw with Jiangsu Sainty.
In the UAE, Alex Brosque played 90 minutes and found the back of the net in Al Ain’s 5-0 win over Lucas Neill’s Al Wasl. Brosque made it 3-0 in first half stoppage time, powering home a header at the front post. Neill played the full 90 minutes in the clash.
Elsewhere, Richard Porta scored again as Dubai drew 1-1 with Al Ahli. Porta, who was substituted in second half stoppage time, equalised on 63 minutes from the penalty spot.
Nick Carle started and played 83 minutes as Baniyas went down 2-0 to Al Wahda. Al Wahda went ahead on 31 minutes, as Carle lost his opponent Eisa Al Marzouqi from a set piece who powered a header home.
In the Qatar Stars League, Sasa Ognenovski put in a full shift as Umm Salal beat Al Wakra 3-2, as did Matt Spiranovic as Al Arabi drew 2-2 with Sailiya.
Elsewhere, Mark Bresciano played the full 90 minutes as Al Gharafa lost 1-0 to reigning champions Lekhwiya SC.
In the MLS, Tim Cahill played 90 minutes in central midfield as New York Red Bulls drew 1-1 with DC United in the first leg of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.
