The Serie A side have taken maximum points from their first three league games and Petkovic is relishing the prospect of seeing how his side fare in European competition.

"For me it is important to play on an international level, because it can help the team to grow by facing a different reality," he told reporters.

"The difference in football can only be positive and seen as a learning experience.

"We will respect our opponents, but try to seize the initiative so we will neutralise Tottenham's style of football by imposing our own tactics."

Spurs won their first English Premier League game of the campaign on Sunday, with a 3-1 victory over Reading.

Petkovic is well aware of the attacking weapons Andre Villas-Boas has at his disposal with the likes of Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Aaron Lennon.

"Tottenham do not just have strength down the flanks, but also through the middle where they are very physical," Petkovic said.

"They're dangerous on set plays. Of course, playing wide is their main strength, but my players know that and will behave accordingly."
