Maccabi were also fined NIS 60,000 and handed a further deduction of three points as a suspended sentence for employing an illegal agent in the signing of Ivan Razic and Milan Merdakovic as well as paying the first player an undeclared fee of $50,000.

The punishment means Maccabi drop to 51 points, 10 behind Beitar, who beat Hapoel Petah Tikva FC 2-0 on Sunday night, with three games of the season left.

But ugly scenes and a pitch invasion at the end of that match which resulted in 50 injuries, four of them serious, mean Beitar face a disciplinary charge of their own on Tuesday.
