OS AUSSIES: Cup action dominated headlines across the UK as the FA Cup weaved its magic with plenty of upsets, with several Aussies at the forefront of the results.
Brad Jones had a moment to forget and unheralded Jamie Young put in a superb performance, while Adam Sarota faces a nervous wait following a knee injury.
In the English FA Cup fourth round, Brad Jones had a game to forget, making a significant error as Liverpool were eliminated following an embarrassing 3-2 loss to Oldham Athletic. On the stroke of half time with the game evenly poised at 1-1, Jones spilled Reece Wabara’s tame cross from the right and it was eventually tapped home by Matt Smith. James Wesolowski played a full game in the clash, and while he comically slipped over while taking a free-kick, it was a game to remember for the combative midfielder as he was wearing the captain’s armband in the absence of Dean Furman. Dean Bouzanis had a solid game in goal for Oldham, his crucial touch on Steven Gerrard’s bullet in the dying minutes helped divert the ball onto the crossbar to preserve Oldham’s lead. Alex Cisak was an unused substitute for Oldham.
Adam Federici played the full 90 minutes as Reading beat third tier Sheffield United 4-0. Federici had little to do as Reading controlled the game for large portions, however he still needed to be alert to prevent Jamie Murphy’s drive which the Aussie was its equal.
Mark Schwarzer played a full game in goal as Fulham were eliminated following a 4-1 loss to Manchester United. Despite the scoreline, the custodian had a decent game between the sticks, making a handful of fine saves as Fulham’s defence provided Schwarzer with minimal protection. The pick of the saves came in the first half as Wayne Rooney’s bullet was brilliantly turned onto the bar by Schwarzer.
Rhys Williams played 90 minutes as Middlesbrough scored a last minute winner to eliminate Jamie Young’s Aldershot Town, 2-1. Young was excellent throughout the clash, twice denying Merouane Zemmama in the first half, the second a stunning diving save as Zemmama’s curling effort looked goal-bound. He continued his inspired form in the second half, only to be beaten twice in the final 10 minutes and Boro scraped through to the next round. Scott McDonald was absent with hamstring tightness.
Shane Lowry was missing through suspension as Millwall progress through to the fifth round with a 2-1 win over struggling Aston Villa. Bailey Wright played 90 minutes as Preston North End drew 2-2 with Coventry City. Wright almost scored the winner with the last play of the game, but he couldn’t get enough contact on Lee Holmes’ free kick to trouble Coventry ‘keeper Joe Murphy. Kruse had a busy first half, creating opportunities for Oliver Fink and Dani Schahin but neither could get their shots on target. Dusseldorf have now lost 4 of their past 5 matches and slipped down the table to 14th, eight points clear of the relegation zone.
Mitch Langerak was an unused substitute as Borussia Dortmund beat FC Nurnberg 3-0. Elsewhere, Nikita Rukavytsya was again absent from the matchday squad as FSV Mainz beat Greuther Furth 3-0. Rukavytsya has not seen any game-time since November 25.
In the German Third Division, Mustafa Amini was an unused substitute as Borussia Dortmund II drew 2-2 with Wacker Burghausen.
Elsewhere in Germany, Mathew Leckie scored in FSV Frankfurt’s 3-1 friendly win over SV Sandhausen. With the league scheduled to restart next week, Leckie looked dangerous and scored the game’s opener, nodding home Moise Bambara’s cross after missing a similar opportunity just minutes earlier.
In the Dutch Eredivisie, Adam Sarota picked up a knee injury as FC Utrecht beat Willem II 3-1. Sarota, who started in the clash, injured his knee in the second half and faces a nervous wait for scans. Michael Zullo was an unused substitute in the clash, while Tommy Oar was absent with a hamstring injury.
