Speaking at training today, Kewell said he was “ashamed” by the result and performance and was adamant new coach Jim Magilton was right in publicly criticising the players.

“I don’t think we can put it behind us. We know we played terrible. We got battered.

“But we can’t think of it too much,” he said.

“We’ve got to know from that experience we don’t want to go through it again.

“We are going to put it aside, but not completely. We don’t want to think about it to an extent but not going through that again,” he said.

“One minute we’re hot, one minute we’re cold but we’re gonna try very hard to correct it.”

Quizzed on whether new gaffer was right in public caning the players for not showing enough pride and Kewell was adamant he was right to say it.

“100% [right]. And the players were ashamed of it [the performance]. And we don’t want to go through that again.”

In team news short term signing Mark Milligan trained at today’s 3pm session along with new signing Julius Doe Davies.

Milligan comes in from J-League during the Japanese off-season and will be a welcome addition to a leaky back four.

“Looking forward to working with him and I know what he’s capable of doing,” said Kewell of Milligan.
