EXCLUSIVE: When you have Paolo Maldini, Christian Vieri and the Matildas backing your book, you must be doing something right - just ask former SBS TV favourite and football fan Liz Deep Jones.
Deep-Jones releases her first football book this Monday. It's called Lucy Zeezou's Goal, an inspiring story about a young girl and her dreams of football stardom.
"It's a story about a young girl chasing her dreams to be a footballer against her parents' wishes," Deep Jones tells au.fourfourtwo.com.
"It has many themes. Football, fashion, modeling … it should appeal to girls and boys because Lucy, the main character, only has played in boys' teams."
Through her contacts overseas, Deep Jones was able to show the book to Italian football legend Paolo Maldini.
The AC Milan and Azzurri star liked the book enough to write a blurb for it, as did Christian Vieri, the Italian striker with the Aussie background.
The publishers Random House released a Johnny Warren kids' book some years ago and from that came the idea for Deep-Jones to write her version of a kids' football book.
"I actually had a dream about the book, so I got up in the middle of the night and wrote a synopsis of the book down and called the publishers in the morning. And that's how it all kinda developed."
As an added extra, Lucy Zeezour's Goal also features stories from the Matildas about their struggles and hardships about following their football dreams.
Deep-Jones' career in journalism has taken her to World Cups and even to the set of Diego Maradona's TV show in Argentina. She even met Spanish star Raul on a recent hush-hush trip to Australia during the European off-season.
The author is also excited about the upcoming W-League, which gives Aussie girls a real career path to strive for.
And the success of the Matildas as role models for thousands of Aussie girls lacing up their boots is another reason why women in Australia, she says, are on the cusp of some exciting times.
"There's a pathway now that's been created by FFA and it's very exciting. And it's exciting for Australian football generally anyway to have the W-League to go with the A-League and the new youth league.
"There are 26 million females who play football around the world," she adds. "So one in ten players are female. In Australia, football has overtaken netball as the highest participation rate sport for girls.
"Now girls are saying, I want to be like Cheryl Salisbury or Heather Garriock."
On hand to help launch the book will be Matilda star Cheryl Salisbury and broadcasters Indira Naidoo and David Basheer.
"The book is about achieving your dreams, just as we've seen the Matildas and Socceroos achieve their dreams in recent years," adds the first time author.
