Manchester United suffered a cup shock tonight - losing 2-0 at home to Coca-Cola Championship Coventry in the Carling Cup. Here, we trawl through the history books to pick out the other cup memories United would prefer to forget.
2006: Southend 1 Manchester United 0 (Carling Cup fourth round)
United had needed extra-time to beat Crewe in the previous round with Kieran Lee scoring the winner in the 119th minute. Sir Alex Ferguson fielded a strong side including Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo at Roots Hall. But Freddy Eastwood's 30-yard free-kick won it for the Shrimpers.
2005: Manchester United 0 Exeter City 0 (FA Cup third round)
Ferguson felt able to field a virtual second-string side so confident was he of progressing against the Conference minnows. But Exeter refused to buckle and might even have scored themselves through former Red Devils trainee Andy Taylor before surviving a late onslaught to earn a much deserved replay.
1984: Bournemouth 2 Manchester United 0 (FA Cup third round)
United arrived at Dean Court as holders and expected to cruise through to the next round at the expense of Harry Redknapp's Third Division side. But, having struggled to impose themselves, Ron Atkinson's side went 1-0 down on the hour when Milton Graham hooked home the opener before Ian Thompson wrapped up a famous win late on.
1976: Manchester United 0 Southampton 1 (FA Cup final)
After finishing an impressive third on their return to the First Division under Tommy Docherty, United were expected to confirm their revival with an FA Cup triumph against a Southampton side who had reached Wembley despite being a league below. Lawrie McMenemy's side had other ideas though and Bobby Stokes' second-half goal ensured the cup headed to the south coast for the first time.
1953: Manchester United 1 Walthamstow Avenue 1 (FA Cup fourth round)
Prior to yesterday, the last time United met non-league opposition in the FA Cup was when the Athenian League side headed north from London. Amazingly, they also left Old Trafford with a draw despite facing a side containing Roger Byrne, Ray Wood and Johnny Berry. Matt Busby's team went ahead through Eddie Lewis but 10 minutes from time, Jim Lewis levelled for the visitors. United made amends by winning the Highbury replay 5-2, so Ferguson will be hoping history repeats itself.
