Sir Alex Ferguson's Red Devils last faced Celtic at the first group stage in 2006 with a victory going to each side over the two legs.

Current holders United face a Celtic side managed by Ferguson's former player Gordon Strachan.

Celtic are at the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League but United have not had the best of starts to their domestic season and currently lie fifth in the Barclays Premier League.

Here is a rundown of their previous meetings:

September 13, 2006: Manchester United 3 Celtic 2

A rare successful night for Louis Saha during his injury-hit United career saw him score twice, the first a penalty, and the decider came from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Celtic's goals came from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who opened the scoring, and Shunsuke Nakamura, who drew his side level early in the second half before Solskjaer struck.

November 21, 2006: Celtic 1 Manchester United 0

United had looked on course for a valuable point from a goalless draw before Nakamura beat Edwin van der Sar with a superb free-kick to score the only goal of the game in the 81st minute. Celtic were knocked out after extra-time in the second leg of their last-16 clash against AC Milan, while United went on to reach the semi-finals before losing over two legs - also to AC Milan.
