After a scoreless first half at the Bluewings' Suwon World Cup Stadium, Senegalese striker Mamadou Niang gave the visitors the lead after 70 minutes, but replays showed Suwon goalkeeper Jung Sung-Ryong was unfortunate with Niang's shot taking a deflection off an Al Sadd player.

The match exploded in the 81st-minute after Niang scored Al Sadd's second goal in controversial fashion.

A Bluewings player had played the ball out to allow an injured team-mate to receive treatment, and instead of playing the ball back to the Korean outfit, Al Sadd took the ball up the field where Niang rounded Jung to score with Suwon offering no resistance.

The goal sparked fierce protests from Suwon, with all 22 players and the benches becoming involved in a melee.

Fights broke out all over the park and became worse when a member of the crowd invaded the pitch.

After the dust had settled, referee Abdul Malik ordered off Bluewings' Macedonian striker Stevica Ristic and Al Sadd's Ivorian midfielder Abdul Keita, but many could consider themselves fortunate to escape punishment.

Niang also received his marching orders late on, after the striker foolishly kicked the ball away after being pulled up for offside to earn a second caution.

The second leg will be played next Wednesday at Al Saad's Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.

In the other semi-final first leg, South Korean side Jeonbuk Motors took a 3-2 win over Saudi Arabia's Al Ittihad at Prince Abdullah al-Faisal Stadium.

Brazilian midfielder Eninho gave the visitors the lead three minutes in, but a brace from Al Ittihad striker Naif Hazazi put the hosts 2-1 up at half-time.

A strike from Son Seung-Joon 12 minutes after the break restored parity, and when Cho Sung-Hwan scored on the 77-minute mark Jeonbuk had secured a memorable win ahead of next week's second leg in Jeonju.
