Two stunning strikes from Brisbane Roar duo Tameka Butt and Katrina Gorry separated the sides, while a second-half penalty save from half-time substitute Lydia Williams saw the Westfield Matildas keep a clean sheet in their final match of the tour.

Despite only four places separating the sides in the world rankings, Australia was rated as heavy outsiders against a team that had finished fourth at the last FIFA Women’s World Cup and Olympics.

The teams went into the match with contrasting preparation, the Westfield Matildas being out-of-season in terms of their domestic competition.

Meanwhile the French were having a final hit out before travelling to Sweden for the European Championships starting this week, where they are one of the favourites to take out the event.
