THE Westfield Matildas will head into a training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra this week in preparation for the team’s USA trip next month.
Head Coach Tom Sermanni has selected 27 players for the camp including Sam Kerr and last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup All-Star Elise Kellond-Knight who are both returning from knee injuries.
Emily van Egmond, Collette McCallum and Michelle Heyman find themselves back in the squad after playing the past months overseas, while Canberra twins Ashleigh and Nicole Sykes have been called up to the senior squad.
The Matildas will play the United States women’s national team on September 16 in California at the Home Depot Center. A second match against the Olympic champions will be held three days later in Commerce City, Colorado.
In preparation to face the World’s number 1 ranked women’s side, the Aussies will play Haiti in Indianapolis, Indiana on September 13. This will be the first time the Matildas have come up against the Caribbean nation.
Ranked 58 in the world, Haiti should give the Aussies – who recently moved up one spot to 9th place on the FIFA rankings – a testing hit out.
“Having three games prior to the Westfield W-League starting again is a good indicator of where we’re at as a squad and where we’ll look to improve,” Sermanni said.
“We’re very much in a transitional period at present and testing ourselves s against the US, who are returning home after winning Olympic gold, is going to be a massive.
“Playing Haiti gives us a chance to settle and allow players to get some rhythm prior to taking on the US which will help calm a few nerves.
“We’re again going with an experimental squad, with some new young players coming into camp and some players returning from injury also in the frame."
