The Australians were defeated 1-0 after a second half goalmouth scramble saw the Matildas fail to clear their lines and Brazil's Rosana pounced on the chance to finish beautifully.

But the young Aussie side put in a five star performance against the tournament favourites and created plenty of chances to level the scores but were let down by poor finishing.

After the game, Sermanni admitted the game had been "...frustrating.

"But it was a great effort from the players," he said. "I think we achieved a lot out of the game today.

"Obviously disappointed in the result but I think we showed - and been acknowledged by the people here - the quality of the type of football that we've tried to play.

"And you know we just nearly got something at the end."

The Scots-born coach admitted he was "very proud" of the squad, and especially the raw recruits to the side like 16 year old Caitlin Foord who shone at right back, tackling Brazil's Marta, hailed as a female Messi.

"Fantastic," he said. You're up against one of the tournament players, the best player in the world, and I think for long periods of the game, we more than held our own.

"I'm very proud of the effort, very proud of the performance, and a little bit disappointed that we didn't get anything out of the game."

He added: It was a poor goal to concede but there were chances at both ends so if you don't concede that goal something else might happen.

"Obviously the players will be very disappointed with the goal we conceded, but that's football.

"We just need to focus on our next game and win our games against Equitorial Guinea and Norway and then hopefully proceed from there."

Kyah Simon joined the praise for her team-mates and was already looking forward to tackling the two remaining games to take them to the quarter finals.

"Both teams had their chances," she said. "Brazil just were lucky enough to finish one of them and we didn't get to finish our chances at the end of the day

"But it was a good game and the girls fought to the end and it was a good preparation for the next two games."

She added: "At the start of the game all the youngsters came together and said we're just going to go out there and play football. At the end of the day it just another game of football.

"Brazil were the opposition but we had to play our game and do what we do and nullify their strengths. All credit to the girls, we fought to the end and were unlucky not to come away with a result.

"We'll look at the game and take away a few pointers and see what we can do better in the next two games.

"But hopefully we can come away with wins in the next two games and you'll see us in the quarter finals."
