Emily van Egmond says the Matildas will not be going into the 2018 Asian Cup in Jordan with an idea they have a mental edge over their opponents.
The Matildas capped off their huge year by garnering back-to-back friendly wins over Brazil and China on home soil.
Australia thrashed China 5-1 in Geelong on Sunday, but coach Alen Stajcic and many of the players felt the score was flattering.
Elise Kellond-Knight said the 3-0 win over China in Melbournewould give Australia a psychological advantage going into the Asian Cup.
However, van Egmond refused to buy into the idea that other teams would be frightened at their ability to score heavily, despite not playing well.
“I think if we go into the tournament with that mentality, we’ll probably find ourselves in a world of pain,” van Egmond told FourFourTwo.
“We were lucky to be able to score the five in Geelong and get away with it. But definitely for the future, we can’t bank on that.
“I think there is more of a concern from an individual point of view. I think we have to look at ourselves and whether we played the best game we possibly could have.
“It definitely wasn’t, so I guess the positive thing too is we can still shift our gears.”
Australia went 1-0 down to China in the seventh minute, but recovered well, pegging back three goals before half-time.
The Matildas hit the lead after Caitlin Foord’s cross forced a disastrous own goal to Li Danyang.
Foord managed 82 minutes in Geelong after lasting the whole game in Melbourne and felt there was a lot of room for improvement.
“We weren’t too happy with how we played in Geelong, but the positive out of it is we didn’t play our best and we still got the result,” Foord said.
“The second-half was a bit tough with the stops and starts, but there were no excuses. We still played OK as a team and I think personally I can do better.
“We can’t take any game lightly, we got some goals today and that’s always a positive as well.
“China had breaks from our mistakes, Staj will touch on that and we’ll be a bit better going into the Asian Cup where we might face them again. It’s better for it to happen now than in an important game."
