Perth have released Downey and approached Fury about signing McBreen for the remainder of the season. While the players and clubs have agreed on the swap, paperwork finalising the deal is yet to be completed.

Fury Coach Ian Ferguson said McBreen had been fantastic in his partnership with Robbie Fowler upfront for Fury and wished him all the best for the remainder of the season if the deal went through and also in the future with  Central Coast Mariners.

"We knew Daniel wasn't going to be here next year. Perth were interested in him and we liked the look of young Jimmy Downey," Ferguson said.

"It looks like it will work out well for well for everyone and hopefully we'll have Jimmy travel to Wellington with us for Friday night's match against Phoenix.

"Both players wanted to move on and there was no pressure from either us or Perth."

The 22-year-old Gympie football product offers Fury another defensive player who can also slot into the midfield. Downey has been offered a contract with North Queensland until the end of the current season.
