A dejected Matt McKay said Brisbane Roar "let ourselves down" after putting their finals hopes in jeopardy with a shock 3-0 loss to Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday night.
Roar came into the match off a four-game unbeaten streak and were hot favourites to sew up the sixth and last finals spot at ANZ Stadium.
But Wanderers had other ideas and within the first 15 minutes Oriol Riera had the home side two up before Chris Ikonomidis added a third on 40 minutes.
Massimo Maccarone looked as if he had dragged one back late in the second half but VAR scrubbed out the goal for an offside Brett Holman.
"Not great obviously," McKay said of the result to Fox Sports.
"The first half to cop three is not what we wanted in a high pressure game for both clubs. We let ourselves down a bit in a lot of areas and they capitalised.
"We had a great run obviously leading up to this one, and we needed to because we didn’t start the season well.
"But we’ve had finals for the last nine weeks like we’ve always said and we lost our final tonight, it’s as simple as that."
Roar will now have to win a tough away match against Glory next Saturday, then hope Wanderers stumble against Adelaide United the following day.
The 35-year-old Roar captain admitted destiny was no longer in their own hands.
"We’ve just got to go to Perth and get a result," he said. "It’s disappointing to concede three tonight, I don’t even know if goal difference comes into it.
"As a team we’ve got to look at what we learned out of this game and perform next week and get all three points."
