THE inaugural A-League Melbourne derby has been moved after yesterday's dramatic AFL grand final replay ensured the events would clash if held when originally scheduled.
The initial 2010-11 Hyundai A-League fixture saw Ernie Merrick's Melbourne Victory clash with newcomers the Melbourne Heart next Saturday at 7.30pm.
But on Sunday the FFA decided to move the fixture to avoid a clash with the match to take place six days later than originally planned on Friday, October 8 at 7.30pm at AAMI Park.
"This is one of our marquee games and it is important that we give our fans every opportunity to get to the game and be part of history," said A-League chief executive Lyall Gorman.
"The rescheduling makes sense on a lot of levels and will give us clear space in the lead up and a clear precinct on the night so we can maximise exposure and attendance.
"I would like to acknowledge the collaborative approach taken by the clubs, our broadcaster Foxsports and all of our stakeholders to allow this move to occur."`
The FFA had planned to wait until the conclusion of the AFL season to increase interest and media attention in the historic derby but with coverage of the grand final replay set to dominate this week the decision was made.
It will be the only Hyundai A-League match of the weekend because it is a FIFA scheduled international weekend, with the Socceroos set to take on Paraguay in Sydney on September 9.
The re-scheduled fixture should ensure the first AAMI Park sell-out for a football match.
