It wasn't a Melbourne Derby to remember, but it did have a few telling performances: see how the players rated in Melbourne Victory's 1-1 draw with Melbourne City.
Lawrence Thomas - 7
Could have been caught off his line by Jamie Maclaren, but apart from that he did little wrong – nearly got to the J-Mac’s penalty as well, he’s had so many near-penalty saves this season.
Leigh Broxham - 7
A strong performance after Victory copped Niedermeier’s red card, on hand to clear every 50-50.
Corey Brown - 6
While he was outplayed by Shayon Harrison, most Victory defenders were. He did stand tall a couple of times, and he is a little underrated…just a little.
Thomas Deng - 6
Not a strong performance, left for dead a few times including a couple of embarrassing misjudged balls. To be fair, however, he’s right up there with the best from corners. Marshalled Ritchie de Laet to perfection.
Georg Niedermeier - 3
The less said about Victory’s own BFG the better. That’s not Big Friendly Giant either…
Raúl Baena - 6
Couple of stupid, rash errors after Luke Brattan appeared to get under his skin.
Keisuke Honda - 6
He was good in the sense that he has a sense of urgency, he passes and moves, he’s classy, but he wasn’t particularly effective for large spells.
James Troisi - 5
He has games where he looks to lack ideas, especially when he has players like Antonis, Barbarouses and Honda around him. Almost like he tries to do too much, dallies, and wastes opportunities.
Terry Antonis - 5
Shocker in the first half, could have given away a goal had Maclaren had a little more composure.
Kosta Barbarouses - 8
A fantastic equaliser, sure it wasn’t vintage Eugene Galekovic but he ran tirelessly all night for little reward, attempting with some success to play a physical style he’s not cut out for. Sometimes a freakish goal is really a just reward.
Elvis Kamsoba – N/A
Subbed early after Niedermeier’s red.
SUBS
James Donachie – 8
Sensational performance off the bench, the only Victory defender to read Shayon Harrison’s movement adequately.
Ola Toivonen - 7
The big Swede always has a big impact, even when he doesn’t actually do that much.
Storm Roux – 7
Played a free-roaming role to good effect, when he actually got a sniff of the ball.
MELBOURNE CITY
Eugene Galekovic – 6
Sloppy for Barbarouses’ goal, caught at his near-post from a tight angle. Came out quickly and looked predictably alert after that.
Ritchie de Laet – 6
Moments of quality scarcely interrupted a general ineffectiveness. Didn’t press forward enough.
Scott Jamieson – 7
Composed second half performance, albeit a few wasted crosses, recycling possession and adding a little more emphasis to what can be a fairly tepid City philosophy. You always notice when Jamieson’s on the ball, put it that way.
Bart Schenkeveld – 8
Boy oh boy do they need to sort out his contract. He’s 27-years-old and at his peak, the best defender in the league. He’s not a bums-on-seats marquee, but he is a marquee.
Curtis Good - 7
You can see why Joyce continues to play Good despite a few disciplinary or injury issues, he has fantastic physical ability. Could easily be a Socceroo in the future if he stays on the park.
Rostyn Griffiths - 7
One absolute belter that every neutral was hoping would sneak inside, inspiring Brattan in the process. He played a very disciplined match after City took the lead.
Luke Brattan - 8
Typical Brattan; edgy, physical, confrontational, almost scored a wordly. It’s getting to the point where you could almost copy and paste this rating every week.
Kearyn Baccus – 6
He has a great skillset but you can’t consistently bomb forward, merely to waste your resultant opportunity, and expect to accumulate praise long-term.
Jamie Maclaren - 7
Another reasonably quiet performance bar the goal, but that’s just the player he is. Well taken penalty.
Shayon Harrison - 7
He is the typical prodigious young English striker: Bags of talent, on loan from a big club, takes players on beautifully, holds the ball far too long, can’t finish and inevitably doesn’t play the full 90.
Florin Berenguer - 5
He’s been disappointing this season, particularly in how inconsistent he is. A few skied efforts that were inexplicable.
SUBS
Riley McGree - 6
Strong passing but not heavily involved.
Dario Vidosic – 5
Few sloppy fouls in the final few minutes.
Lachlan Wales - 6
Full of pressing and energy but unable to impress himself as a goal-threat.
