Meredith debuted for Australia in 2015 and has two senior caps, with appearances against Kyrgyzstan and Bangladesh.

But since then the defender was shut out under Ange Postecoglou, despite impressing in the Championship with Millwall this season and with League One side Bradford City before that.

Meredith, who has been playing overseas since 2004 when he left Australia as a 16-year-old to join Derby County, is hoping for a recall under new national team boss Bert van Marwijk.

"I’m a bit unsure as to why I’ve been overlooked for the Australian team," the 29-year-old told The Sun.

“I work hard and have always done very well. Last year I was in the League One team of the  season and this year I’m playing regularly in the Championship — but I still haven’t had a look-in.

“I feel like I deserve it and I feel like I’m Australia’s best left-back. There’s a new manager now so it’s a clean slate for everyone. I’m just going to work hard and hopefully I’ll get recognised."

Last season Meredith was named in the PFA League One Team of the Year.

This campaign the Albury-born fullback has started every Championship game for the Lions this season.

Meredith has made 31 appearances out of a possible 35 appearances in all competitions.

With Tim Cahill now back at the Den, he hopes the extra attention on the club could benefit his selection chances.

“They’ll definitely come to watch Tim, so that will give me an opportunity to catch their eye," Meredith said.

“Going to the World Cup would be a dream come true. It’s something I’ve been building towards for 12 years."
