ERNIE Merrick is backing his under-fire goalkeeper Glen Moss and remains confident the New Zealander will win over the Melbourne Victory faithful.
The former Wellington Phoenix custodian has found himself a target of a section of the club's boo-boys this season and shipping four goals against Central Coast Mariners at the weekend did little to help his cause.
However, Merrick is refusing to bin the blame for the defeat on the goalkeeper and points to other players who have taken time to win over the Etihad Stadium crowd.
"Glen has played well for us and is one of the reasons why we are sitting second on the table," Merrick told the Herald Sun.
"Sometimes there are newly signed players that the crowd does not take to, but they always prove themselves in the long-term, like Danny Allsopp and Matthew Kemp and Carlos Hernandez.
"We persevere with people. Glen didn't have a great game, but he wasn't the only one."
Victory's disappointment at such a crushing defeat was at least cushioned by the fact that league leaders Sydney FC also lost and the gap between Victory and their rivals remains just a point.
Victory's next A-League clash after the international break takes them north to face Brisbane Roar.
