It was announced on Wednesday morning Cahill would be leaving Melbourne City after arriving at the beginning of the 2016/17 season.

Cahill’s departure may not come as a surprise to many as there were reports he clashed heads with City coach Warren Joyce in the past fortnight.

The 38-year-old also hinted after the Socceroos qualified for the World Cup that he may need to leave the club if he did not get sufficient game time before Russia.

Milligan, who was at Emirati side Baniyas Club before returning for a second stint at Victory, said Cahill could move anywhere he wanted if it suited his football.

And conveniently, the UAE transfer window opens next week.

“Obviously everyone wants to be playing, so everyone has learned never to back against him and no doubt for himself he’s making the right decision,” Milligan said on Wednesday.

“Absolutely no doubt (he can do a job), Timmy continues to do what Timmy does. I look forward to see where he heads next. Him and everyone else in the team will make sure they’re in the best possible place come end of May.”

The 32-year-old could potentially enter his fourth World Cup and conceded he still had no idea who would be the successor to Ange Postecoglou.

The Socceroos will face France, Denmark and Peru in Russia next year, and Milligan said they would not be intimidated by the top-20 nations.

He also said they would take confidence after their performances against Germany, Cameroon and Chile at the 2017 Confederations Cup.

“It’s something Ange has built over the last four years, it doesn’t matter who we’re playing,” he said.

“It’s always tough, it doesn’t matter who you draw. It’ll be a good challenge to start with France, it will be very exciting. We all know if you want to progress through the group, you must start well and there’s no bigger challenge than that.

“Over the last four years it’s what we’ve been building for. You’re always going to get world class teams when you go to a World Cup. We have the group to go through and do well.”

Milligan’s Victory will face Adelaide United on Friday night, with the midfielder set to return from suspension.
