Socceroos midfielder Aaron Mooy scored his third Championship goal of the season but it wasn’t enough for promotion-chasing Huddersfield to avoid a 3-1 defeat to Newcastle United overnight.
The 26-year-old coolly sent Karl Darlow the wrong way from the spot to give Huddersfield a lifeline in the 72nd minute.
Matt Ritchie and Daryl Murphy earlier opened up a 2-0 half-time advantage for the Magpies before Dwight Gayle added a third in stoppage time to seal another three points for the league leaders.
Mooy – who sat out the midweek FA Cup defeat to parent club Manchester City – was again prominent at The Amex, drawing a fingertip save from Darlow just before the break.
The result is Huddersfield’s first home loss since November.
Despite the defeat, the West Yorkshire side remain well in the hunt for automatic promotion thanks to second-placed Brighton’s shock 3-0 slip-up at Nottingham Forest.

Fellow Socceroos midfielders Mile Jedinak and Massimo Luongo enjoyed more success in their Championship encounters as Aston Villa and Queens Park Rangers both won.
Luongo completed 76 minutes of QPR’s 2-1 turnaround against Cardiff City, while Jedinak earned praise from Villa boss Steve Bruce for his part in their 2-0 win away to Rotherham United.
The national team captain turned in a commanding performance at the heart of the visitors' engine room as they made it three on the trot.
