Huddersfield’s performance was full of first half quality before Wagner’s side rallied in the second to hold on for a sterling victory.
Elias Kachunga gave Huddersfield a second-minute lead before former Town striker Danny Ward levelled for Rotherham in the 34th minute.
Nahki Wells hit back for Town to make it 2-1 which is how it remained.
Rotherham midfielder Tom Adeyemi knocked a decent chance wide in the 85th minute.
The Terriers now head to Suffolk to face Ipswich Town on Saturday.
