Inter president Massimo Moratti has heaped praise upon Dejan Stankovic following his contract being terminated.
The 34-year-old spent nine years at the club before deciding to bring his time at San Siro to an end in the close-season, having made just three appearances in 2012-13.
However the midfielder, who featured 315 times in total for the Serie A side, will always remain a club legend according to Moratti.
"I am honoured to be able to thank such a splendid person as (Stankovic) who has done Inter proud and always responded to the fans' desires with courage and character," he told the club’s official website.
"He's a consummate professional who will always be loved by Inter fans and myself in particular. He'll be remembered as a battler who fought with class and courage.
"Thank you, Dejan."
The statement of gratitude comes shortly after a heartfelt message was posted by the Serbia international to Inter fans on the club's official website.
Stankovic, who won five Serie A titles with Inter, wrote: "The last 10 years have been the best of my life. I have grown both as a man and, with immense joy, as a footballer."
The midfielder is now a free agent and is rumoured to have generated interest from the likes of Fiorentina and a number of MLS clubs.
