EXCLUSIVE: POCKET rocket Roar midfielder Massimo Murdocca insists self-belief, not centimetres, is the key to success in the A-League.
Murdocca is one half of arguably the A-League's hardest-working midfield partnership alongside Matt McKay.
While Roar do have imposing figures such as Craig Moore and Josh McCloughan, another of their deadliest weapons is also on the shorter side - Michael Zullo.
Murdocca, who now stands just one game away from a first A-League grand final, admits he had to endure his fair share of scepticism as a youngster but he never let it dash his dreams.
He told au.fourfourtwo.com: "I copped that a bit as a kid (about lack of height) but to be honest, that's what drove me.
"It's good to prove a few people wrong. The important thing for me and I suppose for anyone, is that you believe in yourself.
"That's the way I've always looked at and there's no question that smaller players can be effective. There's a few of us come through the ranks (at Roar).
"Hopefully youngsters out there can see that."
The next challenge for Murdocca is to help his team see off Adelaide United in the preliminary final on Saturday.
He said his dream recently was to score in the finals and he came close in Friday's match against Central Coast, his goalbound net being turned in by Mitch Nichols.
Murdocca said: "I'm always looking for one and I won't stop trying."
