MELBOURNE Victory skipper Kevin Muscat would love the A-League champions to land Mark Viduka and believes he is the perfect man to solve the club's striking woes.
Victory are on the lookout for an experienced striker following the shock departure of the experienced Danny Allsopp to Qatar and there is speculation the club could try to lure Viduka on a guest stint this season.
The career of Viduka, who turns 34 next month, has been in limbo since he left Newcastle following their relegation from the English Premier League last May while he has not played for the national team since the 2007 Asian Cup.
While there is speculation Viduka may decide to retire, the Melbourne-born striker has yet to make any such announcement although there is also talk he plans to return to live in Melbourne after having been based in Europe with a series of top clubs including Celtic, Leeds, Middlesbrough and Newcastle since leaving his original club Melbourne Knights in 1995.
With a new Melbourne franchise set to join the A-League next season, Victory have been urged to try to get in first and secure Viduka this season given he is likely to be the top recruiting target for the new Melbourne club next season.
Muscat, who played alongside Viduka at national level for years, said the big striker would be a massive addition not just for the Victory but any team.
"A fit Mark Viduka would solve many problems I would have thought," Muscat said on Wednesday as Victory come to terms with the end of the prolific Archie Thompson-Allsopp strike partnership.
"If he is anywhere near fit he could certainly do a job not only for us but any team."
But Muscat says he has not spoken to Viduka and has no idea of his plans.
"To be honest I have only heard what I have read in the papers," he said.
Muscat, who looks set to return for Friday night's clash against Adelaide after missing the past five games with a hamstring problem, admits his team - struggling in eighth spot with just one win from six matches so far this season - will struggle to cope without Allsopp unless they sign another big striker in the same mould such as Viduka.
"We haven't got a like for like player so realistically we have maybe got to approach the way we go forward slightly differently to complement the personnel we do have," Muscat said of life without Allsopp.
However the biggest stumbling block for Viduka joining Victory or any A-League club for that matter is salary cap restrictions given no local club could afford to pay the former Australian captain anywhere near the money he was on in England.
Victory football operations manager joked the club could fit Viduka under their salary cap if he was willing to play for the cut-price fee of $100,000 a season.
But Victory chairman Geoff Lord told Fairfax Media that while Viduka is unlikely to join the club full-time on such a low wage, he was hoping he may decide to play for his hometown club on a guest stint.
"One could use (Viduka) as a guest player, one could use him in lots of ways," Lord said.
Meanwhile Muscat said he is hoping this week's grand final re-match against Adelaide will spark Victory back into form after their slow start to the season.
"This week is the perfect game for us going across there (to Adelaide)," he said.
"The atmosphere (at Hindmarsh Stadium) is great and if we can't get up for this game after the way we have performing then I can't see what game we are going to get up for."
