MELBOURNE Victory skipper Kevin Muscat will be honoured with a testimonial at Melbourne's new AAMI Park, but insists the match doesn't mean he's retiring this year.
The first football match at the new stadium, which will host a rugby league test on May 7, is set down for Friday May 14, with Muscat honoured for a decorated career both overseas and in Australia.
His Victory side will take on a Come Play XI, an FFA selected side which will be comprised mainly of Young Socceroos. The 36-year-old said it is a privilege to play his testimonial match at the new ground.
"I'm honoured and privileged without a doubt. When I was first approached by the club with the concept I thought to myself are they trying to tell me something," said Muscat.
"Working through the whole process, I'm excited about it and extremely grateful to the football club in offering me this opportunity."
Muscat's long career started with Sunshine George Cross at 16 years of age and included spells in Great Britain with Crystal Palace, Wolves, Rangers and Millwall before he returned home to captain Melbourne for the past five seasons, a period which includes two championships. He also played 51 games for the Socceroos.
Club CEO Geoff Miles said it was a great opportunity to pay tribute to the enormous influence Muscat has had on the Victory.
"While this night is about our members and fans experiencing football for the first time in the new stadium, it is also about celebrating our captain, Kevin Muscat, and acknowledging his illustrious career as part of his testimonial," Miles said.
"Kevin has made a brilliant contribution to the game and is highly respected by all of the football fraternity. He is an amazing leader and has made an outstanding contribution to Melbourne Victory on and off the field."
Muscat is yet to confirm if he will continue playing in season 2010-11 and said he will wait until after he returns from the World Cup in June to decide if he'll go on.
He added: "I've been honest with the situation right the way through.
"I'm not sure of my future and where it's going to be at the end of the season, but we've got one competitive game in the Champion League and I always did say that I'll make a decision after going on holidays.
"The reality is it might be the one and only time I get to play in the stadium and I couldn't give up that opportunity because it certainly going to be an unbelievable atmosphere, an unbelievable home for Melbourne Victory."
