Muscat's men retained top spot on the ladder with a gritty 1-0 win against Adelaide at Telstra Dome last round.

But the post-match centred on the spitting controversy surrounding Melbourne striker Ney Fabiano.

The Brazilian was dismissed in the 29th minute after he allegedly spat in the face of Adelaide defender Robbie Cornthwaite.

Fabiano, who will face the A-League tribunal on Wednesday night, faces at least five matches on the sidelines if found guilty.

The reserved striker trained with his team-mates in Port Melbourne on Tuesday morning and was the immediate focus when Muscat fronted the press at the close of the session.

"I think it's disappointing that people have assassinated his character immediately," a typically blunt Muscat said.

"I think the most important thing for him and the group is the players are 100 percent behind him.

"We were out there and saw exactly what happened. There is certainly no animosity from the playing group (towards Fabiano).

"We will move on from here whatever happens."

The captain, who scored the winner against Adelaide, said he was irritated by the fact Fabiano's playing future had overshadowed Victory's best win of the season to date.

"Certainly it is frustrating. I think for all football lovers, not only if you play the game," he said.

"I think it's been four weeks in a row now where right up until Wednesday we are talking about instances during a game rather than results and performances and goal-scorers."

While not willing to comment specifically on the incident, Muscat was open when quizzed on Fabiano's value to the team.

"(He's) extremely important. I think we have seen in the four games that he has played, he's of vital importance to us," Muscat said.

"He's a very, very good player. He has settled in very well and his set-up and lead-up work is tremendous."

He added: "He's someone we certainly look to."

"Obviously it's not very nice, it's not a nice thing that he has been accused of."
