Midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura admitted Japan coach Ivica Osim tore into the players after their surprise 1-1 draw with Qatar in the AFC Asian Cup on Monday.
A late strike from Sebastian Quintana denied the defending champions opening their Group B campaign with a victory leading Osim to blast his players for not closing out the game.
And the Celtic star outlined the full extent of the Bosnian's fury.
Nakamura revealed: "Coach Osim told us 'You are not amateurs and you should hold on to the end. It was like demolishing wooden bricks after piling them up.'
"He also said, 'I'm fighting the games to the last and you guys should also play games with the same attitude.'"
Japan had taken the lead through Eintracht Frankfurt striker Naohiro Takahara in the 61st minute and the goal looked good enough for the two-time defending champions to secure three points.
But defender Yuki Abe brought down Quintana just outside the box in the 87th minute and the Uruguay-born striker stepped up to lash a free-kick past Japan goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi and into the net.
"It was not a good result for us as we could've won 6-1," added Nakamura.
"We couldn't score when we had to and committed a foul when we shouldn't have.
"But we passed the ball around and pressed them when they had possession. We need to do that a bit more."
Gamba Osaka right-back Akira Kaji echoed Nakamura's sentiments.
"Qatar scored with the only chance they had," he said.
"We didn't have enough concentration and committed mistakes after leading 1-0."
However Kaji, who played in last summer's World Cup, added that his side should not be too disappointed with this result and instead focus on their next game against the UAE on July 13.
The Gulf Cup champions will also be desperate for their first win following the 2-0 shock defeat by co-hosts Vietnam.
"All we need is to be more careful about finishing off the game and make sure not to repeat the same mistake next time," he added.
