ADELAIDE United FC have signed Central Coast Mariners goalkeeper Matthew Nash on a four week contract to cover the injured Mark Birighitti.
Nash arrived in Adelaide and joined the Reds squad for the first time this morning, and will be the back up to current first choice keeper Eugene Galekovic.
The 27 year old has previously spent a short time with Sydney FC, where he made his one and only Hyundai A-League appearance, before joining NSW Premier League club APIA Leichhardt and then securing a one year contract with the Mariners.
United Coach Aurelio Vidmar said Nash will prove a fine addition to United’s squad having had experience at the two Hyundai A-league clubs.
“We wanted an experienced goalkeeper and someone who has been part of an A-League setup, so we think Matt is a more than suitable replacement,” Vidmar said.
Covering for an injured Clint Bolton while at Sydney FC, Nash secured a clean sheet away against Perth Glory in an impressive debut performance. However, his stay at Sydney FC was short lived and after a second season with APIA, he was offered a contract with the Central Coast.
Nash hopes his month in Adelaide will give him further experience and he looks forward to helping the club towards the Hyundai A-League finals.
“I just hope to continue learning during my time with Adelaide United and gaining more experience with an A-League club,” Nash said.
“I’m looking forward to my time here, the club is at the top of the table and hopefully I can prove my worth while I’m here.”
Nash has also represented an Australian Schoolboys selection in 1998 and 1999 for tours of New Zealand and Fiji.
Birighitti injured his ankle in a training mishap during the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan, and is expected to back to full training at the end of the Hyundai A-League minor round.
