At a press conference at Milan's training ground, the 31-year-old declared he would "never join the national team again."

"My adventure with the Azzurri finishes here," he said, confirming the voices which had been circulating in recent days.

As the fixture list for the upcoming Serie A season was presented on Tuesday, Italian Football League president Giancarlo Abete hinted towards Wednesday's announcement.

"He will soon be reflecting and communicating his future for the national team," he said.

Like Roma's Francesco Totti, who retired last month, Nesta has chosen to sacrifice the national team to concentrate on his club, knowing that the double strain of club and country could adversely affect his physical condition.

His struggles with knocks last year have convinced him to hang up his boots just over a year after helping Italy win the World Cup.
