The battle to see who will end up in Brazil for Neymar Jr’s Five is ready to kick off again, giving amateur Australian footballers the chance to prove their street football prowess in Neymar Jr’s very own backyard.
The world’s biggest five-a-side tournament is back in 2017 where players aged 16 – 25 will battle it out to claim global glory in the world of street football.
After 2016 proved to be a major success for the event, Neymar Jr’s Five will be up and running in seven Australian states and territories kicking off on April 1 after which a total of 28 qualifying events will feature a massive 3,500 players nationally.
The event wraps up on June 10 ahead of the National Final in Melbourne where we will check out the best talent that Australia has to offer.
From there, the national champions will be decided and they will go into battle against 53 other counties, all in an attempt to take out the global title and claim the ultimate prize - a plane trip to Barcelona to meet Neymar Jr himself.
Last year featured over 65,000 players from more than 10,000 teams in 47 countries. The 2016 tournament saw Sydney siders Cheese FC take out the national title in Parramatta and claim the plane ticket to Brazil, to battle it out against the world’s best in the World Final.
The competition’s inspired by the street football Neymar Jr himself grew up playing and the Barcelona and Brazil forward cannot wait to see a new season of this remarkable tournament kick off.
“I always played with my friends, using small goals," he said. "The tournament reminds me of my childhood and I am very proud of it.
"To win the five-a-side games and outplay them all, you need strategy and a good understanding of what the best moment is to attack and defend. A good defense is very important as well and can bring your team very far in the tournament."
The rules are simple for the teams competing from six continents and over 50 countries.. they will battle it out against other five-a-side teams in 10-minute games. The challenge? Each time a team scores, the opposition will lose one of their valuable players making each game fast, technical and somewhat tactical.
Unlike the 2016 tournament where the ages were strictly limited to 16 – 25, the 2017 edition will allow two overage players to be included on the team sheet.
