Hamilton Olympic have been crowned 2009 Northern NSW State League champions after a tense 2-1 win over Valentine Phoenix at Wanderers Oval on Sunday.
Murray Fletcher scored a brace for Olympic after Phoenix skipper Dave Hodgson had given his side the lead on 14 minutes.
Fletcher's first arrived on the 30 minute mark whilst his second crucial strike came not long after the half time interval.
Fletcher's two goal effort not only ensured Olympic headed back to Darling Street Oval with the coveted silverware, but also resulted in him picking up the DG Williams OAM medal for player of the grand final.
The win caps a remarkable turn around in fortunes for Hamilton since they scrapped into the finals series three weeks ago.
Having finished the regular season in fourth, Olympic demolished minor premiers Edgeworth Eagles 5-1 on aggregate in the preliminary final, before seeing off second placed Phoenix in the decider.
In an interesting sub-plot to the whole event, Hamilton coach Bobby Naumov will be replaced by Valentine manager Mick Bolch in the hot seat at Darling Street Oval next year.
What's more, Olympic stars including Fletcher, Ben Hughes, Hakan Canli, as well as 2009 Northern NSW Player of the Year John Majurovski, were all told by the Olympic board they would not be required next season over a month ago.
Undoubtedly there will be plenty of suitors making enquiries regarding these champions winning players before season 2010 kicks off next year.
