EXCLUSIVE: North Queensland FC chairman Don Matheson hopes Jade North will nail his colours to the Townsville mast but rubbished suggestions of a done deal.
The A-League new boys have confirmed the Newcastle Jets and Socceroos defender is a target but there is no ink drying on a contract at this stage.
North's potential switch was revealed today in a Sydney newspaper but Matheson is adamant that it isn't a foregone conclusion.
Matheson told au.fourfourtwo.com this afternoon: "We are waiting to hear back from Jade's agent. Jade will make his decision, sooner rather than later and we hope we will be successful."
Despite an earlier report suggesting Matheson was furious about the North link leaking out, he seemed calm this afternoon and accepted the club's growth wouldn't all be plain sailing.
He said: "We are a club in its infancy and we are determined to do things the right way. You learn as you go along."
Matheson wasn't yet prepared to reveal how many players have been recruited or their identities but said several deals were now just waiting to be formalised.
he added: "We want to make sure that we get players who fit in to our mission statement and the community club we are determined to be."
North Queensland FC's official launch, which had been scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday) will now take place in Townsville next Thursday.
Supporters will have to wait a little bit longer for player news however.
Matheson said: "The club colours and logos will be unveiled. We've some good things to announce but we won't be announcing players on that day."
The club chairman said those announcements would probably follow in the three or four days after the launch.
