“At the moment I’m doing media stuff but long-term I’d like to coach,” he told au.fourfourtwo.com.

“Unfortunately in Australia there are only eight teams and with many people wanting to get involved there are limited opportunities. For the moment I’m just relaxing, enjoying my free time but when I have the right opportunity I’d like to do that.”

Okon says he has even looked into acquiring coaching accreditation as part of his plan.

“I have looked at commencing the licences. I’m maybe looking to start it overseas somewhere. I think it’s important that I do it.

“Do I think it’s necessary to do these licences? No. But today I think it’s a requirement I think you need to have because it gives you a good base. The sooner I get those licences the better.”

Since retiring as player in the off-season, Okon has appeared on both SBS and Fox Sports to give his expert opinion. While it is a role he enjoys, he believes he can contribute more to football in Australia as a coach.

The former Leeds, Lazio and Club Brugge man admits that part of him “misses the game” as a player but he is looking forward to the season as a supporter.

“I don’t have that routine anymore with training and looking after myself and playing,” he said.

“I’m missing it a little bit but I’m comfortable with my decision and looking forward to what life is going to bring with me. I’m definitely a supporter now.

“What we have at the moment is unique with the A-League. If I think back, 10 years ago I thought it would never, ever happen. I didn’t think it would be achievable but we now have a fully professional competition. I look forward to playing my part off the field in helping the game improve in this country.”
