ADELAIDE United midfielder Shaun Ontong will miss the rest of the season after suffering an acute ankle injury at training.
Ontong went down after a training mishap last weekend, MRI scans confirming damage to the ankle, ruling him out for the season.
The former Young Socceroos captain has made nine Hyundai A-League appearances in his debut season and has been a lively injection to the side whenever he has been brought on to the field by Coach Aurelio Vidmar.
“It’s disappointing to lose Shaun because he has provided a real buzz around the place since he’s been here. He’s always energetic at training and he’s got a fantastic attitude,” Vidmar said.
“Unfortunately these things happen but he is a determined young man and I’m sure he’ll come back from this stronger and smarter.”
The 20 year old will now attempt to set his sights on playing a role in Adelaide United’s 2008 AFC Champions League campaign, which begins in March.
Ontong’s setback continues United’s wretched run with injuries this season, the midfielder joining the likes of marquee signing Paul Agostino, young gun Nathan Burns and goalkeeper Daniel Beltrame on the sidelines for an extended period.
