OS AUSSIES: It was a productive weekend for our Aussies Abroad with the young stars in Holland providing plenty of positive news following a bleak week for Australian football.
In the Dutch Eredivisie, Tommy Oar played 90 minutes and provided the assist for the winner as FC Utrecht downed PSV 1-0.
On 71 minutes, Oar whipped in a free kick from the right which was headed home by defender Dave Bulthuis. Oar was replaced in stoppage time by fellow Aussie Michael Zullo, while Adam Sarota started and played 78 minutes in the clash.
Elsewhere Jason Davidson played a full game in defence as Heracles scored twice in the final 10 minutes to beat NAC Breda 2-1. Davidson played a hand in the equalising goal on 81 minutes, as his cross from the left was flicked on by Everton and placed home by Willie Overtoom.
In the English Premier League, Brett Holman provided a trademark energetic performance, playing 79 minutes in Aston Villa’s 2-0 win over Swansea.
Villa’s boss Paul Lambert praised Holman after the game: "Brett needed another lung the way he was performing. He was exceptional, considering he's been away with the national team. The travelling Australia have to do is ridiculous. His effort was exceptional.”
Fellow Aussie Chris Herd didn’t make the match-day squad.
Mark Schwarzer kept a clean sheet as Fulham beat West Bromwich Albion 3-0 at Craven Cottage. Schwarzer had a solid game in goals, making a handful of tidy saves.
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Brad Jones was an unused substitute as Liverpool drew 1-1 away to Sunderland. Adam Federici was absent from the Reading match-day squad as they went down 3-1 to Tottenham.
Mystery surrounds the reasoning behind Federici’s absence, and Reading manager Brian McDermott did little to ease the confusion, claiming it was a “tactical decision” to play Alex McCarthy ahead of Federici before ruling out the Aussie for Reading’s next clash against West Brom through injury.
In the Championship, Mile Jedinak played the full 90 minutes, picking up a second half booking for persistent fouling as Crystal Palace made it 2 wins on the trot with a 1-0 win away to Charlton Athletic.
Shane Lowry put in a full shift for Millwall as they were thumped 4-1 by Hull City. Lowry lined up in the back three in a new formation by Millwall manager Kenny Jackett but it spectacularly backfired as Hull had an extraordinary 26 shots on goal.
Elsewhere in the Championship, Massimo Luongo played the final 18 minutes as Ipswich lost 2-0 away to Middlesbrough, who were without the injured Rhys Williams while Scott McDonald’s exile continued.
Neil Kilkenny was an unused substitute as Bristol City conceded two late goals to lose 5-3 at home to Blackburn. Aussies Seb Usai & Jamie McLaren were not in the Blackburn match-day squad, while Patrick Kisnorbo watched on from the bench as Leeds lost 2-1 at Cardiff.

James Wesolowski returned from injury to play 90 minutes in Oldham’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Notts County. Goalkeeper Alex Cisak also put in a full shift, but was beaten late in the game by a freak goal from Jamal Campbell-Ryce, as his mis-hit cross somehow beat the outstretched hand of Cisak and found the top corner. Fellow Aussie Dean Bouzanis watched on from the bench.
In League Two, James Meredith put in a full shift as Bradford City beat Barnet 3-0, while Jamie Young put in a full shift, keeping a clean sheet as Aldershot drew 0-0 with Morecambe. Elsewhere, Aaron Downes put in a full shift, picking up a first-half booking as Torquay lost 1-0 away to Rotherham.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Nikita Rukavytsya was an unused substitute as FC Mainz lost 3-1 to Bayern Munich, while Mitch Langerak was also an unused substitute as Borussia Dortmund beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0. The former Mariners skipper played the second half for Jeonbuk. Elsewhere, Nathan Burns was absent as Incheon United beat Gangwon 2-1.
