In the English Premier League, Mile Jedinak played a full game in midfield as Premier League new boys Crystal Palace lost 1-0 to Tottenham. Jedinak had a fine game, breaking up numerous Tottenham attacks with his tenacious tackling and pressure.
Mark Schwarzer was an unused substitute as Chelsea got their campaign off to a winning start, beating Hull City 2-0.
Elsewhere, Brad Jones was an unused substitute as Liverpool beat Stoke City 1-0, while Chris Herd was absent with a calf problem as Aston Villa produced a stunning 3-1 win over Arsenal.
In the English Championship, Rhys Williams played a full game in defence as Middlesbrough drew 1-1 with Blackpool. Blackpool took the lead on 83 minutes after Chris Basham found the back of the net after Williams gave away a free-kick on the edge of the box, only for Boro to equalise in stoppage time through Marvin Emnes.
Shane Lowry played a full game in defence as Millwall’s poor start to the season continued, losing 1-0 at home to Huddersfield Town. Scott McDonald came on in the 59th minute and did well to set up Steve Morison late in the contest but the former Norwich striker’s header went straight at Huddersfield ‘keeper Alex Smithies. Millwall are yet to score a goal in their opening 3 league games and sit on the bottom of the table without a point.
Elsewhere, Adam Federici was an unused substitute as Reading played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Watford, while Alex Cisak was an unused substitute as Burnley beat Yeovil Town 2-0.
In League One, James Wesolowski started his first game of the season, playing 90 minutes as Oldham Athletic lost 2-1 to Peterborough United. Oldham manager Lee Johnson reserved special praise for Wesolowski post-match, describing his performance as outstanding.
James Meredith played a full game at left-back as Bradford City lost 2-1 to Port Vale. Meredith made a notable error in the first half with his poor back-pass gifting the opening goal to Lee Hughes.
Bailey Wright played a full game in defence as Preston North End drew 2-2 with MK Dons. Shane Cansdell-Sherriff was absent from the match-day squad.
Massimo Luongo played a full game in midfield as Swindon Town lost 2-0 to Shrewsbury.
Neil Kilkenny started but was replaced after just 34 minutes as Bristol City lost 2-1 to Wolverhampton. The former Leeds United midfielder was substituted for tactical reasons.
In League Two, Aaron Downes played a full game in defence as Torquay United lost 3-1 to Oxford United. Ryan Williams was an unused substitute for Oxford.
In the Scottish Premier League, Dylan McGowan played a full game at right-back as Hearts drew 1-1 with Partick Thistle.
Jackson Irvine played a full game in midfield as Kilmarnock drew 1-1 with St Mirren. Irvine, who joined Killie on loan from Celtic, impressed in his shift with his distribution throughout the clash.

In Ireland, Mark Griffin was an 81st minute substitute as Derry City lost 2-0 to Drogheda United.
In the German Bundesliga, Mitch Langerak returned to the bench following the return of regular number one Roman Weidenfeller as Borussia Dortmund beat Eintracht Braunschweig 2-1.
Elsewhere, Robbie Kruse was again an unused substitute as Bayer Leverkusen beat VfB Stuttgart 1-0, while Nikita Rukavytsya was absent from the match-day squad as FSV Mainz beat SC Freiburg 2-1.
In the German Second Division, Mathew Leckie continued his strong start to the season, providing an assist in FSV Frankfurt’s 3-0 win over Dynamo Dresden. Leckie stormed into the box using his electric pace, drawing 2 defenders before squaring a pass for hat-trick hero Edmond Kapllani who couldn’t miss from inside the 6 yard box. Leckie should have added a goal to his name in the second half but the former Adelaide United winger bounced his effort over the crossbar.
In the German Third Division, Mustafa Amini was a half time substitute as Borussia Dortmund II were thumped 4-0 by FC Heidenheim.
In the Italian Coppa Italia, Carl Valeri was absent through injury as Sassuolo progressed through to the 4th round with a 3-1 extra time win over Novara.
Elsewhere, James Troisi was absent from the match-day squad as Atalanta beat Bari 3-0.
In the Dutch Eredivisie, Jason Davidson made his first start of the season for Heracles , playing a full game in defence in their 4-2 win over Heerenveen. Davidson began the game at left-back but reverted to the centre of defence in the second half.
Tommy Oar started and played 72 minutes as FC Utrecht copped a 6-0 hiding from FC Twente. Michael Zullo was absent from the match-day squad while Adam Sarota was missing through injury.
Elsewhere, Eli Babalj was absent from the match-day squad as AZ Alkmaar beat RKC Waalwijk 2-1.
In the Dutch Second Division, Andrew Marveggio started and played 61 minutes as SC Telstar beat FC Eindhoven 3-0.

In the Belgian Pro League, Mat Ryan played a full game in goal as Club Brugge beat KV Mechelen 2-1. Ryan made an excellent reflex save in the first half to deny Viktor Prodell’s bullet header from Mats Rits’ free-kick, before being beaten in the second half by Seth de Witte’s penalty despite getting a hand on the strike.
In Swiss Schweizer Cup, Oliver Bozanic found the back of the net for FC Luzern in their 11-0 thumping of non-league Murten. Bozanic, who played 60 minutes in the contest, opened the scoring on six minutes with a well taken free-kick.
In Austria, James Holland played a full game in midfield as Austria Wien hammered Wiener Neustadt 5-0.
In Turkey, Kerem Bulut was an unused substitute as Akhisar Belediyespor began their campaign with a 3-1 win over Elagzispor.
In the Greek Super League, Dean Bouzanis was an unused substitute as Aris lost 2-1 to Apollon Smyrni.
In Russia, Luke Wilkshire was an unused substitute as Dinamo Moscow drew 1-1 with FK Krasnodar.
In Croatia, Steven Lustica was an unused substitute as Hajduk Split beat Slaven Belupo 1-0.
In the MLS, Tim Cahill returned from injury, playing a full game as the New York Red Bulls played out a 0-0 draw with Philadelphia Union. Cahill had a chance to break the deadlock in the second half but his header was straight at Union ‘keeper Zac McMath. David Carney was absent from the Red Bulls match-day squad.
In Japan, Josh Kennedy was absent through suspension as Nagoya Grampus scored a late equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Sanfrecce Hiroshima.
In South Korea, Alex Wilkinson played a full game and put in a strong performance in defence as Jeonbuk Motors beat Chunnam Dragons 1-0. Robbie Cornthwaite was a 76th minute substitute for Chunnam in the clash.
Luke DeVere returned to the bench as Gyeongnam played out a 0-0 draw with Pohang Steelers.
