Smith, who is yet to pledge his alliance to Australia, was a surprise inclusion to the Liverpool side after sitting on the bench midweek against Manchester City. Another player yet to pledge his future to Australia is Bradden Inman, who starred for Crewe Alexandra in the English lower leagues with two assists in a match-winning performance.

In the English Premier League, Brad Smith made his debut for Liverpool, coming on in the 60th minute as Liverpool lost 2-1 to Chelsea. Smith, a left back by trade who is eligible for Australia and England, played on the left side of midfield. Goalkeepers Brad Jones and Mark Schwarzer were unused substitutes for their respective sides.

Mile Jedinak played a full game in midfield as Crystal Palace lost 1-0 to Manchester City. Jedinak toiled hard against the star studded City and brought out a fine save from Joe Hart with a stinging effort from outside of the box.

Chris Herd was absent from the match-day squad as Aston Villa drew 1-1 with Swansea City.

In the Championship, Shane Lowry played a full game in Millwall’s 0-0 draw with Doncaster. Lowry, who has primarily played for the Lions as a left-back, played in the centre of defence and went close to scoring midway through the first half with his header being cleared off the line by David Cotterill.  Scott McDonald started and played 80 minutes in the contest and nearly found the back of the net in the second half with his ferocious strike just flying over the bar.

Rhys Williams was an unused substitute as Middlesbrough beat Reading 3-0. Adam Federici was an unused substitute for Reading.

Alex Cisak was an unused substitute as Burnley drew 0-0 with Wigan Athletic.

In League One, Bradden Inman starred for Crewe Alexandra with two assists in their 2-1 win over Colchester United. With his side trailing 1-0, Inman set up Chuks Aneke with a pinpoint cut-back before delivering a corner which Tom Hitchcock nodded home with aplomb to give Crewe the lead.

Bailey Wright played a full game in defence as Preston North End beat Shrewsbury Town 1-0. Neil Kilkenny played a full game in the clash.

Massimo Luongo played a full game in midfield as Swindon Town drew 1-1 with Bradford City. James Meredith played a full game at left-back for Bradford.

James Wesolowski was absent through injury as Oldham Athletic drew 1-1 with Coventry City.

In League Two, Ryan Williams played a full game as Oxford United lost 2-0 to Scunthorpe United.

Aaron Downes played a full game in defence as Torquay United lost 3-1 to Exeter City.

Shane Cansdell-Sherriff played a full game in defence as Burton Albion beat Newport County 1-0, while Ben McNamara was absent from the match-day squad as Northampton Town drew 0-0 with Portsmouth.

In the Scottish Premier League, Tom Rogic returned from injury but settled for a spot on the bench in Celtic’s 1-0 win over Inverness.

Dylan McGowan played a full game in defence as Hearts drew 1-1 with St Mirren. McGowan, who has been a mainstay in the centre of defence this season, started at right-back and performed well in the contest.

Jackson Irvine played a full game in midfield as Kilmarnock lost 3-0 to Hibernian.

In the Turkish Second Division, Kerem Bulut was a 61st minute substitute as Karsiyaka drew 1-1 with Ankaraspor.

In the UAE Pro League, Brett Holman played a full game as Al Nasr drew 1-1 with Al Dhafra.

Elsewhere, Alex Brosque played a full game as Al Ain lost 2-1 to Al Jazira, while Milan Susak played a full game in defence as Al Wasl drew 1-1 with Baniyas.
