In the English Premier League, Mark Schwarzer played the full 90 minutes as Fulham defeated Wigan 2-1. Schwarzer made a flurry of saves in the second half to keep Wigan at bay, including a superb stop from Ivan Ramis’ header.

Brett Holman put in a full shift but was relatively quiet in Aston Villa’s poor 4-1 loss to Premier League new-boys Southampton. Chris Herd was again missing from the match-day squad.

Elsewhere, Adam Federici was missing through injury as Reading’s poor start to the season continued, losing 1-0 away to West Bromwich.

Brad Jones watched on from the bench as Liverpool went down 2-1 to Manchester United, Jones however did see some game-time on Thursday in the Europa League, playing 90 minutes as Liverpool beat Young Boys 5-3. Jones was involved in a terrible defensive error on 37 minutes where he and defender Jose Enrique failed to take control of an innocuous ball into the penalty box which was stroked home by Raphael Nuzzolo.

In the English Championship, Neil Kilkenny made his first league appearance of the season, coming on as a substitute on 61 minutes as Bristol City drew 2-2 with Watford. The midfielder had a golden chance to score the winning goal in the dying moments of the match, but he blazed over from inside the box.

Shane Lowry played a full match as Millwall lost 2-1 to league leaders Brighton.

Mile Jedinak wore the captain's armband and put in a full shift as Crystal Palace came from 2-0 down to record a stunning 3-2 win over Cardiff, while Massimo Luongo played the full 90 minutes as struggling Ipswich went down 2-1 to Charlton.

Elsewhere, Patrick Kisnorbo was an unused substitute as Leeds beat Nottingham Forest 2-1, while Rhys Williams and Scott McDonald were absent from Middlesbrough’s shock 2-1 win over Blackburn.

In League One, Dean Bouzanis put in a full shift between the sticks in Oldham’s 1-0 loss to Brentford. Bouzanis, who had a solid yet unspectacular game in goals, picked up a yellow card in the second half for handling a back pass. James Wesolowski also started for Oldham and was replaced after 55 minutes, while Alex Cisak was an unused substitute.

Shane Cansdell Sherriff played 90 minutes and gave away a penalty as Preston threw away an early lead to lose 3-1 at Walsall. Bailey Wright also put in a full shift for Preston.

In League Two, James Meredith played the full 90 minutes as Bradford City continued their bright start to the season with a 2-0 win at Oxford. Aaron Downes played 90 minutes as Torquay conceded a late goal to draw 1-1 with Burton, while Jamie Young had a fine game for Aldershot, however a dubious late goal saw the Shots go down 1-0 to Accrington Stanley.

In the Scottish Premier League, Ryan McGowan put in a full shift as Hearts beat Dundee United 3-0. McGowan played a key role in Hearts’ third goal, swooping on a stray backpass before his shot was saved but then finished by Callum Paterson. Dylan McGowan also saw some game-time, coming on as a 83rd minute substitute.

Alex Baird was an unused substitute as Dundee FC were beaten 2-0 by Celtic and Jackson Irvine wasn’t in the Celtic match-day squad.

In the Scottish Third Division, new Rangers signing Francesco Stella was an unused substitute as Rangers thumped Montrose 4-1.

In the Irish Premier League, striker Mark Griffin was sent off as Dundalk moved a step closer to relegation with a 1-0 loss to Shelbourne.

In the German Bundesliga, Robbie Kruse put in a full shift as Fortuna Dusseldorf played out a 0-0 draw with Freiburg. Kruse was lively but poor finishing again plagued Dusseldorf, who have only scored two goals from their opening four games.

Nikita Rukavytsya played the final six minutes of FSV Mainz’s 2-0 win over Augsburg, while Mitch Langerak was an unused substitute as Borussia Dortmund slipped to a 3-2 loss to Hamburg.

In the German Third Division, Mustafa Amini was an unused substitute as Borussia Dortmund II lost 4-3 to Unterhaching.

In the Dutch Eredivisie, Tommy Oar and Adam Sarota put in a full shift as Utrecht scored a 1-0 win away to Roda JC, fellow Aussie Michael Zullo was an unused substitute. Oar had a good chance to score in the second half but pulled his shot wide, however he was involved in the game's only goal, delivering the freekick which was poorly dealt with by Roda ‘keeper Filip Kurto and eventually tapped home by Dave Bulthuis.

Elsewhere, Jason Davidson and Travis Cooper weren’t involved in their sides 1-1 draws with Vitesse Arnhem and RKC Waalwijk respectively.

In the Dutch Second Division, Corey Gameiro was a 65th minute substitute as FC Eindhoven drew 1-1 with Excelsior.

Mathew Leckie was absent from the FSV Frankfurt side that beat FC St Pauli 2-1, also missing was Andrew Marveggio, who was absent for FC Telstar in their 3-2 loss to Dordrecht.

In the Italian Serie A, James Troisi was an 83rd minute substitute in Atalanta’s 1-0 win over Palermo, while in the Serie B, Carl Valeri was absent with injury as Sassuolo beat Spezia 2-0.

In Austria, James Holland put in a full shift and picked up a first half yellow card as Austria Wien lost 1-0 to Red Bull Salzburg.

In Denmark, Brent McGrath was a half time substitute as Brondby played out a 1-1 draw with FC Midjylland.

In the Portuguese Primeira Liga, goalkeeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell was an unused substitute in Vitoria Setubal’s 1-0 win over Olhanense.

In the Czech Republich, Kerem Bulut made his first appearance of the season for Mlada Boleslav, playing the final 22 minutes in their 1-0 win over Hradec Kralove.

In Croatia, Tomi Juric was a 65th minute substitute as Inter Zapresic hammered Zadar 5-1.

In Serbia, Matthew Byrne was a half time substitute as Donji Srem went down 2-1 to FK Rad Beograd. Elsewhere, Eli Babalj was absent from the Red Star Belgrade side which defeated Hajduk Kula 1-0.

In the Greek Super League, Apostolis Giannou was an 86th minute substitute as PAOK beat SKODA Xanthi 3-0.

In the Belgian Second Division, Kofi Danning was absent from the CS Vise match-day squad as they drew 2-2 with Royal Antwerp.

In the Russian Premier League, Luke Wilkshire returned to the Dinamo Moscow starting line-up, putting in a full shift as Dinamo beat Amkar Perm 3-2.

In the MLS, Tim Cahill played the full 90 minutes for New York Red Bulls in their 1-1 draw with New England Revolution. Cahill provided the assist for New York’s 91st minute equaliser, nodding a cross from the left flank to the unmarked Joel Lindpere who headed home.

In the J-League, Alex Brosque scored for Shimizu S-Pulse, his first in 2 months, but it wasn’t enough as they went down 3-2 to Cerezo Osaka. Brosque scored on 70 minutes with a perfectly placed free-kick. Jade North put in a full shift as Consadole Sapporo were thumped 5-0 by relegation threatened Omiya Ardija.

Elsewhere, Josh Kennedy put in a full shift as Nagoya Grampus lost 2-1 at home to Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

In the K-League, Luke Devere returned from injury, playing 48 minutes as Gyeongnam beat Jeonbuk Motors 2-1. Alex Wilkinson remained on the bench for Jeonbuk. Brendan Hamill started and played 51 minutes in Seongnam’s 1-0 win over Gangwon.

Matt McKay put in a full shift as Busan I’Park conceded a late goal to draw 2-2 with Ulsan Hyundai, while Nathan Burns was absent from Incheon’s match-day squad as they drew 1-1 with Daejeon Citizen.

Elsewhere, Eddy Bosnar & Adrian Madaschi put in full shifts as Suwon Bluewings beat Jeju United 2-1.

In the Chinese Super League, Daniel Mullen put in a full shift in defence as Dalian Aerbin continued their good form with a 2-1 win Qingdao Jonoon. Aerbin are now undefeated in six matches and sit in sixth spot. Rostyn Griffiths played 55 minutes as Guangzhou R&F suffered a shock 3-1 loss to relegation threatened Henan Jianye.

Milan Susak played a full game in defence as Tianjin Teda went down 2-0 to Shandong Luneng.

Joel Griffiths played the full 90 minutes as Shanghai Shenhua drew 1-1 with rivals Shanghai Shenxin, while Dino Djulbic put in a full shift for Guizhou Renhe as they went down 2-0 to Beijing Guoan.

In the Qatar Stars League, Matt Spiranovic scored his first goal for new club Al Arabi in their 1-1 draw with Al Khor. Spiranovic opened the scoring on 14 minutes with a timely header from a free-kick.

Elsewhere Mark Bresciano put in a full shift as Al Gharafa were held to a 0-0 draw by Al Kharitiyath. Sasa Ogenovski was absent through injury as Umm Salal were thumped 5-0 by Al Rayyan.

In the UAE, Lucas Neill made his first league appearance for Al Wasl, playing the full 90 minutes in their 4-1 win over Wahda Abu Dhabi, while Richard Porta played 89 minutes in Dubai's 0-0 draw with Al Fujairah.
