EXCLUSIVE: New North Queensland signing Panni Nikas says Fury might surprise a few pundits this season – but the club is still to officially announce their new coach.
Fury's interim CEO Archie Fraser stated that the coaching announcement would be made by the end of May but the Townsville-based club are still to unveil the mystery man - thought to be a well-credentialed German coach.
Meanwhile, Fury have continued their recruiting drive. Football operations manager Robbie Middleby, assistant first team coach Stuart McLaren and the club's fitness staff ran trials in Sydney last week ahead of the new season in August.
The two-day exercise at Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush was for around 20 players largely from the NSW State League involving endurance testing for the heat of north Queensland and technical analysis.
From these tryouts, Fury have signed former Central Coast Mariners youth star and last season's NYL Player of the Year Panni Nikas.
The midfielder has been playing for Sutherland Sharks in the NSW Premier League but leaves this week for Townsville. It's believed Bankstown's Brett Studman, another NSW Premier League player, has also been signed by Fury.
The NSW pair join highly rated striker David Williams, Dyron Daal, Justin Pasfield, Osama Malik, Jack Hingert, Chris Grossman, Jason Spagnuolo, Ufuk Talay, Matthew Ham, Simon Storey and Schalke's Andre Kilian in Townsville.
Nikas, 23, was discarded by new Central Coast coach Graham Arnold late last season after breaking into the first team squad at Bluetongue at the turn of the year.
Now Nikas is putting his faith in Fury to get it right in their second season in the A-League.
"Last year they finished not far off the six so I think from what I've understood from the coaching staff, I reckon the Fury will do well," Nikas told au.fourfourtwo.com.
"It's hard to predict at this early stage but I trust in the coaching staff and what they're doing and who they're bringing in.
"I wasn't nervous at all. There were players there I play against week-in-week-out," he said of the invite-only trials.
"They liked what they saw and from the recommendations from other sources they offered me a contract.
"I'm getting there as early as possible. I'll have good eight or nine weeks to adapt. And other players will be in the same boat so we'll work on it together."
He added that he won't bear any grudge against his former A-League club the Mariners who surprisingly cut him loose when the two sides meet on October 2.
He added: "I did what I had to do in the NSW Premier League and the NYL. In simple terms, joining Fury, it's an opportunity."
