The heavy sanction is in line with a previous incident involving ex-Melbourne Victory player Ney Fabiano who was hit with a nine match ban, reduced to six, for a spitting incident in 2008.

The minimum sanction for the offence is six weeks.

But the delay in handing down the penalty for the latest controversy has clearly put the A-League outfit offside.

In a statement Roar said: "Given the lateness of the decision handed down by the Disciplinary and Ethics committee the blub will be consulting barrister Mr Simon Philips regarding an appeal of the findings handed down."

The incident occurred almost two weeks ago when tensions spilled over between Papadopoulos and Sydney FC striker Matt Simon at Allianz Stadium.

Video replays showed Papadopoulos spat at the Sky Blues frontman, who fired up before retaliating with a shove to the ground. Both players were issued straight reds.

The hefty penalty on the 32-year-old includes one match already served.

Following the verdict, a contrite Papadopoulos said; “I would like to once again apologise for my actions in our match in Sydney on November 25 and take this opportunity to thank the club, Professional Footballers Australia, and barrister Mr Simon Philips for their support throughout this process.”

Papadopoulos will be eligible for selection in round 16 match when Roar take on high-flyers, Newcastle Jets scheduled on January 12 next year.

Football Federation Australia must be advised of any intention to appeal the decision within seven days.
