Just one senior player has arrived at St James' Park this close-season, with Loic Remy joining on loan from QPR. 

The club have also seen the likes of James Perch, Danny Simpson and Steve Harper move on, and Pardew is aware that "one or two" more players are needed, with a forward the priority.

"I don't see a lot of late business for us but we do need another striker in," he said.

"We need a sound backroom in terms of strikers. In the short term, we need another striker.

"It is always frustrating for a manager because you want the best players you can get but we have a strong squad, and we did some business last January that has put us in good fettle."

So far, Remy, who will miss the opening game of the season through injury, has been the only transfer success for recently appointed director of football Joe Kinnear, who was brought in to aid player recruitment. 

However, despite the lack of transfer activity, Pardew feels that the former Newcastle boss has "worked hard" during his second stint at the club. 

"Joe's position is that he is here to make sure transfers come in, he really has the role Derek Llambias had, and he has worked hard and so far it is working okay," Pardew added.

He also confirmed that the club are likely to continue their tactic of buying young players for less money, rather than paying out big transfer fees and large wage packages.

"The figures that the top clubs are paying out are just ridiculous," he explained. "We can't compete with them on a financial level.

"So we're going to have to be as clever and as shrewd as we can be to get players who are the same quality for a lot less money.

"We've managed to do it with a few players, (Yohan) Cabaye, (Cheick) Tiote, (Papiss) Cisse, that's what we need to find, one more like that."

Remy will miss Newcastle's opener against Manchester City on Monday due to a calf strain, while Davide Santon, Steven Taylor and Jonas Gutierrez are also doubts.
