Petkovic, a former star of the National Soccer League with South Melbourne, endured a torrid start to life in the Hyundai A-League as Victory conceded seven and went winless in their opening three games of the new season.

Victory have finally begun to show signs of improvement, with a 3-0 win at home to Brisbane Roar followed by two consecutive goalless draws in the past three games.

"We had some teething problems at the start, but we've hopefully sorted them out and in the last few games we've been looking a lot better," Petkovic said.

"Three clean sheets in a row is a good feeling for me personally, but at the end of the day winning three points means more than keeping a clean sheet.

"Overall, the boys in front of me have been doing well. Even though we haven't managed to score for a couple of games, we've still been playing attacking football. We've just been unlucky.

"We've still got a lot to work on and hopefully we'll get a lot better throughout the season."

Petkovic was signed by Victory as a replacement for Borussia Dortmund-bound Mitchell Langerak and New Zealand international Glen Moss, who joined Gold Coast United in July.

A 33-year-old veteran and former Socceroo, Petkovic is used to the scrutiny that comes with the number one jersey.

"As a goalkeeper, any goal you concede you are going to cop some criticism, because you are the last line of defence," he said.

"In any position it's difficult for a new player to come in and for the goalkeeper, no matter what team you play for or what style you play, at the end of the day you've got to stop the goals.

"You could say it took me a while to adjust to the style that Ernie (Merrick) sets out the team to play but I'm getting used to my team-mates and hopefully in the last few weeks we've started to gel and get to know each other better."

Next up for the Victory is an away match against the financially-stricken Newcastle Jets, who will be flying high after their immediate future was secured by the intervention of mining magnate Nathan Tinkler.

"They had a good result last week and I've heard that they've got a new owner, so they may come out firing," Petkovic said.

"It'll be a tough game for us, coming after three games in one week, but we've been training well this week and we've had a long week to recover so we'll be going there looking to win three points."
