New Zealand's latest A-League club will be known as Wellington Phoenix FC after the side rose from the ashes of the failed Knights venture.
Owner Terry Serepisos unveiled the name after fronting more than $1 million to ensure the franchise's existence and said he had been overwhelmed by the public response.
The public came forward with more than 250 possible names for the new franchise, which was narrowed down to six.
"Phoenix took my eye and has stayed with me. It symbolises the fresh start, the rising from the ashes and the incredible Wellington support that has come out," he said.
A logo featuring the bird and the words has been revealed, with the Wellington colours of yellow and black prominent.
He said the FFA would sign off the image before a formal release and it would become the cornerstone of franchise branding and marketing.
